WFR Bush Buggy Operating Instructions

Operation also includes the optional CAFS system.

Upon receipt of your WFR Bush Buggy Package, please check for damage in shipping and report this to the freight company immediately. After removing any packing material, please check the engine for oil and gas. Bolt down the tank in its location on your vehicle, so it will not move (bolts not supplied). Mount the pump system with four heavy- duty bolts at the back of the truck for easy access to the controls (bolts not supplied). Hook up the line from the bottom of the tank to the TANK manifold. Hook up the line from the red DISCHARGE manifold to the top tank inlet. If your system was supplied with the optional built-in foam tank, hook up the foam line supplied.

Things to note on start up:

  1. Check engine oil
  2. Fill gas tank with regular gas
  3. Vent on gas tank must be open during operation (18hp only)
  4. Prime with primer bulb before starting (18hp only)

Filling of tank:

  1. Tank may be filled by removing large fill opening in top of tank and inserting a hose.
  2. Tank may be filled by removing 65mm (2.5”) PLUG and hooking up a 65mm (2.5”) fire hose and filling direct to bottom of tank off a hydrant or truck. (38mm 1.5” if you have the 11HP or 9HP model)
  3. Tank may be filled from the 38mm (1.5”) discharge by using a double female adapter and hooking up a 38mm (1.5”) fire line if preferred.
  4. Note: your Bush Buggy package may have come with a 65mm (2.5”) or 38mm (1.5”) inlet depending on size of pump supplied.
  5. We recommend using a suction hose with a foot valve strainer.

Priming of pump:

  1. It is important that the pump is not run dry for more than 3 minutes as it will overheat and burn out the bearing or seal.
  2. When priming the pump with water in the tank via gravity feed, open the valve between the tank and the intake manifold, then open one of the gated valve discharge lines on the pressure side manifold and the water will find its way through the pump pushing out the air. When water comes out, you may shut off the discharge valve and start the engine. With engine running you can tell if you have prime by the pressure gauge, as it will show pressure. If you are going to run the engine more than 7 minutes without flowing water, open the return valve on the pressure side going back to the tank. This will keep the pump cool. Note: be sure to close the foam-metering valve, or you will get foam into your tank causing bubbles.
  3. Priming pump when tank is empty and drafting from a pond to tank. This is the most complicated operation on this system. It is also the most likely operation that may cause heat damage to your pump when using the exhaust primer.

    Follow these steps:

    For pumps with hand primers:
    1. Shut foam meter.
    2. Close main water supply valve.
    3. Remove plug to inlet.
    4. Pump hose in pond to fill hose with water, then hook-up suction hose with strainer, foot valve type to pump.
    5. Open small handle valve on primer system on discharge on pump.
    6. Use brass hand pump until you have water coming out of hand pump.
    7. Close valve on primer system and start engine

For pumps that have exhaust prime do the following:

    1. Repeat above procedures up to D.
    2. Open small handle valve on primer system inlet of pump.
    3. Start engine and run at slightly higher than idle (do not race engine)
    4. Hold down exhaust diverter on top of engine, until water flows from exhaust primer.
    5. Close primer valve and open exhaust diverter.
    6. At this point there should be pressure on the gauge.
    7.  Slowly open valve to the tank on discharge manifold.
    8. When using hard suction hose to draft, (not supplied) be sure to use hose with proper fire thread couplings, insuring a good seal as any air leaks will prevent a prime.
    9. Use a good screen to prevent rocks from entering the pump.
    10. A foot valve/screen is recommended, as it will hold a prime easier.
  1. If your Bush Buggy is equipped with a Class A foam tank and around the pump foam system. To operate be sure you have foam in the tank. Open valve from foam tank, dial the metering valve approximately three complete turns open, counter clock-wise. You may have to adjust this depending on how many lines you are flowing and what volume. This may vary depending on the type of foam required, wet water or heavy foam.

  2. If you have the Optional CAFS: You would have purchased either the under the hood compressor for continuous air flow to your bush buggy package or the dual cascade bottle option which will allow you to flow approximately 6,000 gallons of foam before having to recharge the air system. To operate this package follow the same procedures as listed above but you will have designated CAFS only discharges. These discharges are designed to operate by opening the valve, just like you would on the other lines, but you will have an extra air valve going into the valve which needs to be opened. (Use a straight bore nozzle on these outlets) You will have two 440 cu ft air cylinders charged to 4500psi. A manifold with a male connection will allow you to fill your system off any high pressure compressor (same as used for your SCBA) These two 4500 cu ft bottles are to be opened before operating the CAFS outlets and before opening the valve at the CAFS outlet. If you have purchased the under hood air compressor, you will turn on the compressor from the cab of your vehicle before using your Bush Buggy/CAFS system.

Cascade bottle feature used to produce CAFS with WFR patented mixing valve:

  1. Open cascade bottles.
  2. Use standard operating procedures for pump as above, but you will be using the CAFS outlets not the water/foam outlets. These outlets are preset so there are not adjustments to be made.
  3. Open the CAFS discharge valve and when the water/foam mixture is flowing, open the air valve on this discharge water valve. This will introduce the air into the mixing chamber.
  4. When shutting down turn off the air valve first, then shut off your foam metering valve and after water is flowing clear, shut down the pump system.

Honda warrants the engine for 24 months against defects and workmanship. WFR warrants all other components for 24 months against defects and workmanship.

Thank you for purchasing a WFR Bush Buggy Package/CAFS.
