Operating Instructions for Firefighting Trailer #1
Pump Operation--Do Not Run Dry
- Open tank dump valve.
- Start motor.
- Ignition switch up.
- Pull out choke (cold starts).
- Pull out throttle ¼ way.
- Push starter button.
- Check outlet pressure. If no reading is obtained, activate the primer located
above and to the left of the control panel. This is done by pushing down on the black
knob. When a reading is obtained, go to Step 4.
- Open valve to recirculation piping (located at the bottom of the vertical
riser at the front of the tank).
- Adjust throttle so outlet pressure reads 120 PSI.
- Open valve to desired appliance and close by-pass valve.
- Adjust throttle for maximum efficiency of water stream.
Monitor Operation
The monitor can be adjusted horizontally and laterally. Locking collars must be
loosened to allow movement and tightened to hold the desired placement. A shut-off
valve is located just below the monitor.
Hose Operation
To use the fire hose, grasp the bottom loop and pull the complete hose load out.
Advance the nozzle to the desired location and signal for the valve to be turned on.
A collar on the nozzle allows the nozzleman to set the nozzle for the desired gallonage.
The tip can be adjusted for straight stream or fog patterns. The "U" handle shuts the
nozzle off when pushed forward and turns it on when it is pulled back. The nozzle should
be operated fully open.
Tank Operation
A wetting agent (WFR 3% Training Foam) is provided to break the surface tension
of the tank water. Prior to engaging in firefighting operations, 2-5 gallon containers
of the concentrate are to be emptied into the tank water by way of the top hatch.
This 1% solution will make the water more efficient and allow greater penetration
of burning materials. These containers are stored on the top of the trailer. (MSDS
sheet attached.)
IMPORTANT
On completion of firefighting operations, treated water must be drained prior to
refilling the tank. A 1½" drain is located at the rear of the tank on the underside.
Fresh water is to be run through the pump, using the monitor as a discharge. Prior to
re-housing, the water tank is to be refilled. Filling can be done from a hydrant,
using the 2½" hose, or from an inside water line, using the 1½" hose.
CAUTION
When using a fire hydrant, it must be turned fully on. If it isn't, the drain holes at the
bottom do not seal and water will leak onto the ground, possibly causing the ground to
sink. Prior to using the hydrant, a 2½" hydrant gate must be attached. The hose
is then attached to the gate and the gate can be used to regulate the flow of water.
When the hydrant is turned off, the caps must be left off for a short period to allow
the hydrant barrel to drain. If this is not done, the hydrant may freeze. A simple
test to see if the water is still draining is to place your hand over the open port.
A slight suction will be felt if the water is draining out.
The fire hose should be wiped down and reloaded. To reload, the hose is connected to
the outlet and positioned down the back of the rack and laterally to the front of
the rack, making a fold back about 12" from the front. The next layer is laid
flat to the back of the rack. It is then folded forward and laid to the front. This
next loop extends past the front of the rack by about 6". This procedure continues
with the front loops being staggered (long and short) until the hose is loaded.
The nozzles are attached and kept closed.
While in storage, all valves are to be kept closed.
PRECAUTIONS FOR WINTER OPERATION
After use, water must be drained from all piping and the pump. Drains are provided on
the underside of the pump housing, below the monitor and at the bottom of the by-pass
piping. To ensure a complete drain, disconnect the hoses and open the hose and monitor
control valves. When all water stops flowing, close all drains and valves and
re-attach the hoses.
Primer
A reservoir of oil is located adjacent to the primer handle at the upper left side
of the control panel. It is to be kept topped up with 20W50 oil or Grade 90 gear oil.
