Up-Indicator Switch

Lets you know when your Extenda-Lites are in the up position. Extenda-Lite's Up-Indicator Switch is designed to work with any of our Push-Up or Pull-Up poles, with or without light heads.

The switch and wire leads are neatly installed so you have no unsightly clamps or loose wires to contend with.

It's simple, just attach the two wires from the switch to any 12 volt warning light or device. This will alert the driver not to move the apparatus until the Extenda-Lite's are lowered.

Installation: Mount your Extenda-Lite with the Up-Indicator switch body (it's black) toward the body side of the apparatus. Install the warning light or alarm device as per the customer's specifications. Next, you will have to extend the blue and green leads from the Up-Indicator Switch to the warning device. Install an inline 3.0 amp. fuse holder and fuse in the blue wire leading to the Up-Indicator Switch. The green wire from the Up-Indicator Switch will be wired to the warning device.

Field mounting of a Pull-Up Up-Indicator Switch

Begin by loosening the strain relief cap on the bottom of the outside pole. Next, loosen the three set screws on the lock collar, and pull the inside pole completely out of the outside pole. Remove the entire strain relief from the bottom of the inside pole, and off of the coil cord. Slide a 1/2” x 3/8” bushing over the coil cord, and screw into the bottom of the pole. Slide the supplied magnet over the coil cord up to the bottom of the inside pole. Install a 3/8” strain relief against the magnet on the bottom of the inside pole. Make sure there is no slack remaining in the wire inside the pole before tightening.

Tighten the coils of the coil cord so that they can be easily slid into the outside pole. Slide the coil cord and inside pole back into the outside pole as far as it will go. The coil cord should be against the bottom of the outside pole. Slide the lock collar onto the top of the outside pole, and tighten a set screw. Pull enough coil cord out of the outside pole, so the inside pole will completely retract. Wrap a wire from the Up-Indicator switch to one probe of a continuity checker, and the other UI wire to the other probe of the continuity checker. Slide the switch up the outside pole, until the switch closes, and the checker indicates a complete circuit. This spot should be approximately 10” up from the bottom of the pole. Mark the location of the switch holes, and set switch aside. Loosen the set screws in the lock collar, and remove the inside pole from the outside pole.

Using a center punch, mark the switch hole locations, and then drill through the pole using a # 43 drill bit. After drilling the pole, tap the holes using a 4-40 UNF tap. All mounting brackets should be on the pole prior to installing the switch. Install the switch by using the screws supplied. Do not over tighten.

Tighten the coils of the coil cord so that they can be easily slid into the outside pole. Slide the coil cord and inside pole back into the outside pole as far as it will go. The telescoping inside pole will stop 6" to 8" from the top of the outside pole. With a pair of needle nose pliers pull coil cord out of the bottom of the outside pole. (Pull only approximately 3 coils of the coil cord out the bottom of the outside pole. CAUTION: be very careful pulling the wire out so that wire insulation is not cut). Install the 1/2" strain relief in the bottom of the outside pole, but do not tighten the strain relief cap down on the wire.

Align the Locking Collar on the outside pole and tighten the three (3) set screws. Pull the inside pole all the way up until it stops on the Locking Collar and tighten the hand knob on the locking collar. Pull all excess coil cord through the bottom hole in the strain relief. Install the strain relief rubber plug and tighten the strain relief cap. If the telescoping pole does not go all the way down so that it is resting on the o-ring, turn the light head counter clockwise a couple of turns to tighten the coil cord or pull out a couple more coils from the bottom of the pole.

With the outside sleeve in its normal light down position, take a measurement from the top of the top busing to where the switch needs to be located between the brackets. Write this measurement down for later use.

Loosen the strain relief cap on the bottom of the inside pole. Loosen the two set screws underneath the top bushing, that are holding the inside pole. Heat may need to be applied to the pole below the bushing to allow the set screws to move, and the pole to be pulled off the bushing. Pull 2-3 feet of cord out of the top of the light head. Cut the cable just above and below the current wire splice. Be sure to leave enough wire coming from the light head to resplice. Never splice wires in the light head. Place the two magnets with the polar fields in line, and slide the magnets down the cable towards the pole. Resplice the wire using 16-14 gauge insulated butt connectors, and shrink tubing or electrical tape. Pull the wire tight from the light head, and measure down the same distance you previously measured. This is where you want to place your magnet. Put a piece of tape above, and below the magnets. Do not use a lot of tape, as you probably will have to move the magnet. Slide the pole, back on the bushing, and pull the wire tight from the bottom.

Wrap a wire from the Up-Indicator switch to one probe of a continuity checker, and the other UI wire to the other probe of the continuity checker. Place the switch on the outside pole, until the switch closes, and the checker indicates a complete circuit. This spot should be between the mounting brackets. If it is not, pull the pole back off of the bushing, and adjust the magnets up or down as needed. Once the location is found, mark the location of the switch holes, and set switch aside.

Using a center punch, mark the switch hole locations, and then drill through the pole using a # 43 drill bit. Be careful not to mar the inside pole. After drilling the pole, tap the holes using a 4-40 UNF tap. Install the switch by using the screws supplied. Do not over tighten. Recheck the continuity. If the circuit is still complete, separate the pole and bushing again, and add any extra thickness’ of tape you may need. Before putting the pole back on the bushing for the last time, you should put a small ribbon of epoxy around the inside of the pole. Reinstall the set screws using Red Loc-Tite on the threads. Pull any excess wire out the bottom of the pole, and tighten the strain relief.

Drill a small hole through one of the brackets to allow the wire to be concealed going to the truck, or run the wire straight through the apparatus wall. Shrink tube or electrical tape any exposed wires. Finally, follow the Up-Indicator mounting instructions.
