Moose Jaw Fire
Department

The fire was reported at 1100 hrs on New Years Day, Jan. 1,
2004 and fire extended from the
building of origin to 2 adjoined buildings located south and sharing a common
brick wall
with the fire building. These buildings were of historical value but none
were equipped
with sprinklers or fire alarms.

Initial response was 2 Engines and 1 Aerial and 12
personnel which was increased to a total of
5 Engines, 1 Aerial, 1 Aerial/Platform, 1 Command Vehicle, 3 Support Vehicles
and 44 personnel.
Eng. #3 (pictured above) was pumping to its deck gun and a ground monitor. In
the picture,
the deck gun has been shut down. It held this position pumping for 19 hours and
6 minutes.
This ice covered picture of Eng. #3 was taken was taken
shortly before it stopped pumping and
returned to quarters. Eng. #3 extricated itself from its position in 4X4 drive.
It
took several hours to thaw completely.
Committed apparatus was reduced to 1 Engine and 1 Aerial at
1300 hours, Jan. 2. A Fire Dept.
presence was maintained for over 72 hours and site security (police
responsibility) was
maintained to facilitate an investigation and evidence continuity. The
subsequent fire investigation
determined the cause of ignition to be electrical. The investigation took 3 days
and involved the use
of heavy equipment including a crane.
